Siloton
Siloton is revolutionising eye care by providing better and more frequent access to critical retinal imaging technology using the power of integrated photonics. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is the gold standard for retinal imaging and a vital resource for the diagnosis and monitoring of retinal conditions affecting over 300 million people worldwide. However, access is currently limited to clinical settings (optometrists and hospitals) due to the size, complexity, and cost of devices. This means that many patient are diagnosed too late for effective treatment or are unable to access the technology at all.
Siloton is breaking down these access barriers by taking OCT imaging out of the clinic into the community and even into the home of patients. Integrating 80% of the optical components onto a single photonic chip means a portable, robust, handheld, and user-friendly device can be constructed for this purpose. Siloton recently became the first commercial entity to image a live human eye using a photonic chip. Many of the team have backgrounds in quantum photonics, with this experience integral to design and test devices sensitive enough to measure the single-photon level of signals returned from the eye.
Based in Bristol, Siloton is seeking engagement with those that are interested to work in a start up and are looking to positively impact society with their work. We are particularly seeking anyone with integrated photonics or electronics expertise who can help contribute to active projects, including developing devices for retinal monitoring of astronauts during long-term space flight!
